Most people think of flight simulators as simple computer games where people fly around the virtual skies for fun. A few discussion forums online and it seems almost every hour of a day there is a posted thread about something technical about routing the aircraft wiring, setting up the software for running, and building it correctly. These builders are so quick to share their share their photos of their newest, ongoing builds, help each other troubleshoot if issues arise and post if they are making any progress towards or reaching milestones in their build.

The sharing of information and experiences about sim is not for sharing gaming tips. In these communities, there are really pilots, aircraft mechanics, electrical engineers, and software developers that actually know the aircraft with the components, that adds another layer of experience if some kind of “simulation” issue arises. You get a member or member to post about trying to build or replicate some piece of the specific aviation system and within a couple of hours what felt like a dozen people jump in with lengthy technical references from pilots or members with real aviation backgrounds.

There were regional meet-up and conventions organized so builders could showcase their ongoing creative projects, but for me what kept sucking me was simply the amount of people there to show some cool setups. Walking through those meet-ups and conventions looking before hundreds of builds felt more like strolling through an aircraft museum, rather than going to a GA fast-pass gaming convention. The building composition and understanding of all the technical detail within each display recreate memories of commercial aircraft simulator training and experience.

In each meeting the challenge to produce realistic experience of a flight sim develop technical skills that advance beyond just building a gaming experience. Those who practice building a cockpit successfully often develop skills in a variety of areas such as electronics, woodworking, metal fabrication, and computer programming. They learn how to deal with aviation-grade components while obtaining a basic working knowledge of electrical systems and proficiency in configuring complex software packages.

The software portion of flight simulation can often be overly complicated on its own. The modern flight simulation experience relies on a coordination of several applications to handle different aspects of the experience. The technology is continuing to advance rapidly. In the modern era, virtual reality headsets create an unbelievably realistic immersive aviation visual experience where the cockpit controls are physical components. The cockpit representations these builders are recreating may arguably be the most sophisticated home-built electrical systems in an advancing area of the economy, all in the interest in pursuit of giving themselves as real a flying experience as they can have in their lives.
